I guess trying and failing is better than not trying at all.

In sad news Japan, home of Kyoto and tentacle porn, has announced that they will not meet their goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In fact they are reported to rise at about 9%. Unfortunately the business community has been reluctant to go green due to the expense.

Now I applaud Japan’s efforts in this treaty, but I am disappointed in their results. Then again the goals seemed a little out of reach even for the most optimistic of armchair environment activists. Maybe they need a big concert to promote awareness of an issue they’re already aware of.

  1. It looks like a lot of the blame lies with household emissions rather than the business sector.

This raises a good point, though. With businesses it’s fairly easy (although not without opposition I’m sure) to put in place specific restraints. You must reduce this measurement by this amount, etc. Otherwise we don’t let you continue business.

This isn’t quite as easy to do for households and individuals, though. You can’t take away a “housing license” or deport somebody for an infraction.

It seems like a change this drastic would require a combination of some sort of auditing agency as well as a large PR push to get the word out and generate support as a nation. That’s tough to do.

Anyway, good thing we totally dodged that bullet entirely.
