Wordsmith spoiler below…

Oxford University Press has chosen their word of the year for 2006. Its “carbon neutral”, which by my amateur count is actually two words.

I hope that this proves some of the momentum is behind the idea of being carbon neutral. Oxford seems to do a good job of picking what themes that will have some staying power.  (Last year’s winner was podcast)

Make sure you look at the other finalists. My favorite is “elbow bump”, though our old friend “CSA” (community-supported agriculture) is there as well.

  1. goes to show, Oxford lexicographers are not mathematicians. it also supports that the English language is the absolute worst language in existence. only in English can one come up with the “word”: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
yes folks… that is a real word. its definition; a lung disease caused by inhalation of silica dust. also defined as one of the longest words in the English dictionary.

  2. Looks like Merriam-Webster is nice enough to let people vote for the word of the year. Go get yer vote on here.
