Better make sure your homeowner’s insurance is up to date

An apparently new thing in the world of lockpicking and burglary: Bump Keys. These are essentially keys filed down to the lowest point to fit in a lock so you can “bump” them with something (like a hammer) to jar the pins into place so you can turn the lock.

In Europe, this is becoming a problem because insurance companies are refusing claims because there is no evidence of a burglary. Y’know, besides all your stuff being gone.

  1. Some cars are vulnerable to this as well, apparently. My friend had his vehicle stolen with what the police described as a filed-down key.
Fortunately he didn’t have a problem proving the car was stolen, as the police found it with another gentleman inside it.
