Oh Yeah? Well we’re taller!

I don’t want to turn this into a huge political or religious debate, but the results of this international evolution survey really surprised me. We are very nearly last of the 34 countries participating. Granted that the countries are primarily in Europe, which I generally deem to be more liberally minded than us. But ignoring our ranking, I’m still surprised that just 40% of the US population and falling now believes in evolution.

Reference: Jon D. Miller, Eugenie C. Scott, and Shinji Okamoto (2006) “Public Acceptance of Evolution” Science Aug 11 2006: 765-766.

I agree with the above article that the decline in belief in evolution can be largely linked to politicization of the debate as well as a lack of understanding in the general population.

  1. I’m not sure what’s causing the increase in ignorance in this country, but it sure is pissing me off. This is just one symptom of that problem…

  2. I’m really curious where Israel ranks, or any of the Arab nations for that matter.

Also evolution has been taught in the public school system of Europe far longer than we have. Why we’re so slow to embrace is debatable, but really none on the right, and even some on the left, have any idea of what the theory truly means and therefore intelligent debate about the issue is nill.
